How Becoming A Mom Inspired Josie Maran To Launch Her Beauty Brand

The first thing that impressed me most about Josie Maran? She answered my questions when her second daughter, Indi Joon, was only seven weeks old! Her little bundle is now almost a year old (that says a lot about how fast I work, right?), and her oldest daughter, Rumi Joon, is 6 years old. But those nuggets aren’t the only things that keep Josie Maran constantly on the go. The ex-supermodel and former Maybelline spokesperson founded her own eco-chic namesake cosmetics brand six years ago (the same time Rumi was born) and is now a QVC star with countless beauty awards to boot. How in the heck did she do it? That’s what I asked…

Pretty Impressed:  It takes a lot of courage to launch your own business.  What is the defining moment that made you say, “Yes, I can do this!”
Josie: My whole life has been one long moment like that. Which was kind of rough on my parents when I was a little kid!

PI: Has being a mother changed you in how you perform as a business leader?
Josie: When you’re ready to take on the world, great things can happen. My advice? Never take “no” for an answer. All my life I had people telling me I couldn’t do it all and have it all: I couldn’t be a model because I’m short. I couldn’t have a business and a family at the same time. I couldn’t make natural cosmetics. If I’d listened to them, I wouldn’t be where I am and Josie Maran Cosmetics wouldn’t exist. If there’s something a woman really wants to do, she should just do it!

PI: Do you ever have a momentary lapse in confidence, and if so, what brings back your drive?
Josie: Everyone has moments of self-doubt. Getting centered about why something is important to me always brings back my drive. Making a better world for my children and being a positive role model for them keeps me going.

PI:  What do your children love about your job?
Josie: My older daughter, Rumi, loves trying samples of new products we’re testing. She’s such a girly girl. Indi’s a little too young to know that mommy has any job other than taking care of her.

PI: Anything they hate?
Josie: Rumi doesn’t love it when I get too dolled up or wear fake lashes. She likes me to look like mom.

PI: When you are dead tired, zombie-like exhausted, but you still have a million things to cross off your list, what are your tricks to making it to the end of the day?
Josie: I breathe deeply and imagine all my insides are smiling. It brings a little extra joy and a boost of energy to finish out my rough day.

PI: What are your beauty tricks to not look exhausted when you can barely put one foot in front of the other?
Josie: Argan Oil! It helps to add glow around your eyes even when you’re exhausted.

PI: What are your wardrobe staples?
Josie: Vintage dresses, riding boots, Closed skinny jeans and an old vintage tee.

PI: What are the top 3 things you’ve created in your line that you love most, and why?
Josie: My 100% Pure Argan Oil ($48) is my number one beauty must-have! It’s an all-natural, 100% organic oil that really works. It keeps my skin fresh and dewy even in harsh weather.  Also, my Argan Color Sticks ($22 each) are amazing because they’re so multi-tasking. You can use them on your cheeks or lips for a natural flush of color. They hydrate skin and lips so you get this natural glow that I love. The last would be my new Argan Hot Oil Self Heating Hair Treatment ($36 for 5 ampules). It takes 60 seconds to get the moisture and shine back into anyone’s hair. It warms itself up so no mess or waiting time to use it. It actually makes hair stronger, healthier, and shinier. I use it once a week.

PI: Many busy moms just feel proud on the nights when they get dinner on the table, let alone run an entire company. What’s your time-management strategy?
Josie: Build a community and lean on them when you need to. Even superwomen need support, so don’t be afraid to ask for help.

PI: You support many charities. How did you choose them?
Josie: I believe that doing good is a beautiful thing, so it’s part of the philosophy of Josie Maran Cosmetics to give back.  We try to help nonprofits working for diverse causes. We have products that give back to a foundation that helps to prevent the extinction of polar bears, and we have products whose sales support women with cancer. I’m especially drawn to charities like Women for Women International that help women become strong leaders in their society. We women need to lift each other up!
