Recently I blogged about my best tips on how to apply sunscreen on your face so that it really works. Now, it’s time to tackle the body. Don’t forget that it’s important to slather yourself with SPF anytime your skin will be exposed to UVA / UVB rays. NYC dermatologist Dr. Brandt recently told me that most of the sun damage that a person accrues during her lifetime is just from walking around outside—not from getting burned at the beach, although you don’t want that to happen either! It’s best to just put it on before you even get dressed in the morning, then if you are outside all day, you should reapply every two hours. In fact, you should use about an ounce of sunscreen (think of a shot glass) every time you apply it, but that varies on how big or small you are. If you were spending the whole day at the beach, you should almost have to use an entire tube of sunscreen.

There are so many new and different types of sunscreens, it’s easier than ever to find one that works for you, whether you are going to the office, the beach or just running errands. Don’t forget that it takes 15 minutes for sunscreen to start working (sort of like waiting for your nails to dry), so be sure to apply it before you leave the house. And make sure you have sunscreen stashed in your bag or desk drawer to reapply throughout the day, especially to your hands since we wash them so often, which removes the sunscreen. Here are some of my favorite sunscreens:

1. It’s important to wear sunscreen all over, but on my décolletage area—which for many women can be the most sun damaged part of their body—I like to use a moisturizing, budge-proof formula. Either I’ll slather my face cream all the way down there or I find that Previse Sunsheer SPF 25, $tk, stays put even if I get a little sweaty.

2. The fastest way to cover your body? Use a quick-drying spray. I love the Coola Unscented Sunscreen Spray SPF 30 Sport, $32, because it doesn’t smell at all, so it doesn’t compete with anything else I’m wearing. If I forget to put it on before I get dressed, then I’ll just spray my legs and arms before running out the door. Just watch out if you are using applying a spray sunscreen outside when it’s windy, which can blow the sunscreen away before it hits your body, leaving you unprotected.

3. Want to give you skin a really pretty sheen? The new L’Oreal Sublime Sun SPF 50, $9, is just like a dry body oil, but loaded with sunscreen. I especially love to use this when I’m wearing a skirt or dress and running around town all day on appointments.

4. Have a bad case of lizard legs? Use the new Banana Boat Protect & Hydrate SPF 30, $9, as a body moisturizer in the morning. It’s extremely moisturizing and makes scaly skin look soft and smooth.
