You know those sweltering summer days when the humidity is almost 100%, the thermometer is pushing 90 and you look at your blow dryer and think—What’s the point because it’ll all just frizz out anyway? Those were the weather conditions when I had an appointment with Ammon Carver, Matrix Artistic Director and Celebrity Stylist, to experience the new Matrix Biolage Advanced Keratindosed Collection, which launches this month, July 2013. I’m always excited to get a sneak peek of new product launches, but why bother with a blowout when I’ll just walk outside into sticky NYC and have a literal mane meltdown. But can you really ever say no to a blowout? Of course not. And I’m glad I didn’t because I picked up some tips that actually made my hair survive the oppressive heat.
First, the more conditioned your hair is, the less it’ll frizz out because there are less fly-aways and broken bits to swell up with humidity. The new Matrix Biolage Advanced Keratindose Collection, which contains a shampoo, conditioner, and renewal spray, claims to leave hair 90% more conditioned after one use, which I can’t prove exactly, but I can say that my hair hadn’t felt as soft and light in a very long time. The sulfate-free, paraben-free formula contains pro-keratin and silk to restore and lock in hair’s optimal protein and moisture balance. It’s recommended for those who receive haircolor (that’s me), relaxer, texturizer and keratin straightening services. I also received the in-salon Advanced Keratindose Treatment, which took less than 10 minutes, and is like a mega-dose of the at-home regimen. Add that on to your next hair color service to keep hair in tip top shape.
Next, I picked up this genius hairline trick that I’ve never seen before:
Step 1: After blowdrying my hair, Ammon put a dollop of mousse on a towel.
Step 2: Next, scooped a little mousse up with a comb, then ran it all along my hairline.
Step 3: Then, still using the comb, he pulled all those tiny fine hairs—which are most prone to frizzing—straight up and out and dried the mousse with the blow-dryer, using the nozzle attachment to get close to the roots.
Not only did this create a lot of volume around my hairline, making the whole style look a little extra bouncy, but the mousse locked in those fine hairs, which didn’t frizz at all when I carried on my day in the horrid heat. I went to three meetings, took two subway rides, and walked about 20 blocks, and then took my “after” picture, shown above. Not bad, right?
The Matrix Biolage Keratindose Shampoo and Conditioner are $19 each, and the Keratindose Pro-Keratin Renewal Spray is $22. Visit Matrix.com for salon locations.
