I recently worked with an amazing makeup artist, Alice Lane, on a beauty shoot for Glamour magazine. We did a story called Wake Up Your Makeup, and while Alice is still in her 20’s, she taught me this amazing blush trick that instantly makes you look more youthful: Instead of applying cream blush to the apples of your cheeks, like we are normally advised to do by many makeup pros, apply it a little farther up on the top part of the fleshy area of your cheeks. See the photo above, where I’m tapping along the ridge of my cheekbone. As we age, we lose density in our cheeks, thus that dreaded sallow, sagging look. Not to mention any loss of natural radiance. Having a pop of color at the top of your cheeks makes your face appear appear more full and youthful. Just be sure to blend really well, and press the blush into your skin, instead of rubbing it back and forth which cause streaks. Just dab and press the blush until it is seamlessly blended. Ever since I’ve learned this tip, it’s literally the first thing I put on after foundation or tinted moisturizer. It’s also really fast, so it’s great to do when you’re in a rush. I really think it makes a difference. Try it out and let me know if you agree.
Need a great cream blush? These rock:
1. Make Up For Ever HD Microfinish Blush, $26, combines mattifying and reflecting powders to create a soft-focus effect for a radiant complexion. It’s super easy to blend, but you only need the tiniest dab—a little goes a long way.
2. Tarte Airblush Maracuja Blush, $25, is very creamy and warms cheeks up with a sheer, glistening glow.
3. Revlon PhotoReady Cream Blush in Flushed, $13, is a great drugstore pick. It has photochromatic pigments that reflect light which gives cheeks a beautiful glow.
