I cringe when I think about how much sugar my kids consumed over the holidays. From the first gingerbread house making party in early December to our recent cookie bake-athon during the Polar Vortex, Amelia and Lucy have had some sort of sugary treat every day. It’s time for a sugar detox!
Recently, Meredith Geller, HHC, Holistic Nutrition and Lifestyle Consultant based here in NYC, came over to show us how to make some healthy, delicious smoothie recipes with our new Nutribullet. (Read: My Kids Drank Lettuce—And Loved It!) She also whipped up this rich, delicious chocolate peppermint recipe for the kids. It’s turned out to be a great help to wean my little sugar addicts off of the hard stuff. They love measuring all the ingredients (just like baking), putting it in the blender, then blasting away. It’s a great alternative to baking with your kids—and you’ll love it too!
Chocolate Candy Cane Smoothie Recipe
2 cups unsweetened vanilla almond milk
2 tbsp raw cacao powder
1 tbsp raw cacao nibs
1 tbsp raw coconut butter
1 tbsp vanilla flavor (note this is different than vanilla extract because it doesn’t contain alcohol)
1/8 tsp pepper extract of fresh peppermint leaves
4 dates, pitted and soaked for 10 minutes
It’ll stay fresh for up the 3 days in an airtight glass container. Also, you could substitute the peppermint for banana, cinnamon or other ingredients. Get creative!
