The other day I had to rush from my daughters’ swim class to a client meeting and knew that I wouldn’t have any time between to change clothes. I was in skinny jeans, an Everlane slouchy tee shirt and short boots. So I grabbed my black blazer and some jewelry and ran out the door. After swim class, I handed my kids off to the babysitter, threw on the blazer and instantly felt more put together. The slightly structured element of the blazer offset the casualness of the tee shirt and I looked ready for work. As I was on the subway to Soho for the meeting, I realized that the right blazer can make any outfit look more polished. I thought about wearing a blazer with denim shorts and a tank when the weather gets warmer. I thought about putting one over a chambray shirt with white jeans. Throw a black blazer over a summery dress and it says spring instead. Everything I could think of in my wardrobe would be bettered by a blazer! It’s not ground breaking, but it takes a casual look to another level in seconds.
With this in mind, I researched some versatile black blazers that have a slimming cut, hit just at the hip and can be easily dressed up or down. I found two excellent bargains, and a splurge that’s worth it. Here they are:
1. Topshop Slim Fit Tailored Blazer, $90
2. Helmut Lang Gala Twill Blazer, $460
